Why does nobody talk about how much shampoo bars dry out hair?
I read a study from a dermatology journal last month that said bar shampoos have a higher pH than liquid ones, which can strip natural oils. I tried one for two weeks and my ends felt like straw. Has anyone else noticed this difference?

Ha, the "straw" thing is exactly what happened to me. I used one of those fancy avocado shampoo bars for a month and my hair looked like I'd been running a blow dryer on high for an hour every day. My sister-in-law said I should just add more conditioner, like that would fix it. But @lewis.troy you're right about the green thing, I thought I was saving the planet but really I was just drying out my scalp. Last week I found an old bottle of my Suave coconut conditioner in the back of the cabinet and squirted it all over my ends and suddenly remembered what soft hair felt like.

Oh man, I used to be all about shampoo bars and thought they were the greenest option out there. But after a few months of dry, crunchy hair I finally checked the pH thing and yeah, my personal experience was a total wreck. Your mileage may vary but that study lines up exactly with what happened to me, so I switched back to liquid and my hair is way happier.

Three months in my hair felt like straw, I couldn't even run my fingers through it without snags. Then I did the same basic pH test at home and saw it was way too alkaline for my scalp. Switched back to a regular liquid shampoo and within a week my hair felt normal again.
