Showerthought: A client's comment about her wedding photos made me see my work differently

She said, 'I didn't realize how much my hair color faded in the sun until I saw these pictures from last summer.' Now I'm adding a specific sun exposure warning to my color aftercare sheet. Do you guys mention sun protection during consultations?

You calling the sun a color remover really hit me. I used to just blame fading on cheap shampoo or hard water. But last month I saw a client's bright purple ends turn pale gray after two weeks in Florida. Now I tell people straight up, your color is like a tattoo for your hair, and the sun will bleach it out fast. I even show them a side-by-side of my own hair from before and after a summer hiking trip.

Oh wow, that's such a good point... I had a client say almost the same thing about her red color fading after a beach vacation. It never crossed my mind to bring it up before that. Now I make sure to tell everyone, especially my blondes and fashion colors, that the sun is basically a color remover. I even keep a little bottle of UV protection spray by the register to show them what to buy. It really does make a difference in how long the color lasts.
