My old instructor told me to never use thinning shears on curly hair
Back in beauty school in 2005, Mrs. Patterson swore up and down that thinning shears would ruin any curl pattern. For years I followed that rule strictly with my clients in Denver. Then about 6 months ago I tried it on a regular who has super thick 3B curls and honestly it worked great. She had way less bulk and her curls still bounced back fine. Has anyone else had an old school rule that turned out to be wrong in practice?

Huh, I don't know if one success story means the old rule was totally wrong. Plenty of curlies still end up with weird frizz and wonky shapes after thinning shears, even with sharp blades.

yeah I was the exact same way until I tried it on a client with really dense 4a curls. just gotta use a light hand and stay away from the roots. biggest thing is making sure your shears are sharp as hell or you'll get that crunchy split end look.
