I stopped fighting cowlicks with heat tools and used a 10 cent cotton pad instead
I had a client named Dana with a cowlick at her crown that fought me for 3 visits in a row at my chair in Boise. I was hitting it with a 400 degree flat iron, spraying root lift, blowing it with a round brush, nothing held past the parking lot. One slow Tuesday I was watching an older stylist named Rosa finish a blowout and she just pressed a cotton pad soaked in cold water on the spot for about 15 seconds before she set it. I tried it on Dana the next week, cold pad first to kill the heat memory, then rough dry the root in the opposite direction, then a light pass with the iron only at the very end. It stayed down for her whole shift and she texted me a picture at 9pm to prove it. Now I keep a stack of plain cotton pads next to my station and wet one before almost every root set. It sounds too simple to work but the cold shock really does reset how the hair wants to lie. Anybody else learn a trick from a stylist who had been behind the chair way longer than you?
