Had a 10 minute chat with a nail tech in Houston that totally shifted how I do foam highlights

She said I was overprocessing the hair by leaving the lightener on too long because I was scared of it not lifting, and she was right... now I check every 5 minutes instead of waiting 15. Any other tips you've picked up from folks outside your own specialty?

Wait, you actually listened to a nail tech about hair? I gotta admit, I used to think nail techs had no business talking about hair stuff. Like, they do nails, what do they know about lightener? But then a cosmetologist friend told me the same thing about checking every 5 minutes and it totally clicked. She said most people leave it on too long because they're scared of resistant spots, but that just cooks the hair. Now I'm way more careful and my highlights come out softer and less damaged. What's the biggest thing they told you that you were shocked actually worked?

Nail techs have zero business talking about hair until they drop a tip that actually saves your strands, right? The wildest thing mine told me was to use cheap conditioner as a pre treatment before lightener. I laughed at her face, no joke. Figured it would just block the bleach or mess up the lift somehow. Tried it once out of spite and my hair came out softer AND lifted faster somehow. Now I feel like an idiot and she gives me that smug look every time I see her. Still refuse to admit she was right though.
