Chose booth rent over commission, 4 months later I'm drowning in taxes

I left a chain salon in Austin to do booth rent at a small place downtown. The split seemed obvious, keep 100% of what I make instead of 40%. But nobody warned me about the self-employment tax hit or that I'd have to buy my own color line and backbar supplies. I just paid $1,200 to the IRS last week and my chair rent is still due Friday. Has anyone else made this jump and found a way to budget for the quarterly payments without panic?
