Saw a foreman run an entire site from a free trial spreadsheet, somehow worked
Stopped by a buddy's job site in Austin last month to drop off some tools and he showed me their whole project tracking setup. Dude was running scheduling, RFIs, and material orders through a free trial of some random spreadsheet add-on that kept popping up ads every 20 minutes. He had to refresh the page every time someone asked for an update and twice the whole crew lost their daily tasks because the trial hit a data cap. The kicker is they finished framing two days ahead of schedule anyway because the foreman just wrote everything on a whiteboard in the trailer and used the software only for the owner's weekly report. It really made me wonder how much of our paid software is actually doing the work versus just making us feel organized. Has anyone else seen a crew run fine on duct tape and a whiteboard while the fancy system just collects dust? Asking because I'm about to renew our Procore contract and I'm not sure it's worth the headache.
So the whiteboard was actually running the job and the spreadsheet was just for show? Curious what happens when the owner stops caring about that weekly report, does the whole thing fall apart or does the foreman just keep doing his thing? And did your buddy ever figure out what those daily tasks were actually worth if nobody missed them when the trial capped out?
