I Miss the Days When a Clipboard and a Pencil Didn't Need a Software License
Last Tuesday our internet went down at the site office and I couldn't pull up the daily logs on the new platform we switched to. We had 14 guys standing around waiting for me to tell them what to do, and I couldn't even see the task list because it was all locked in the cloud. I ended up digging out an old paper log book from a filing cabinet and writing everything by hand. It felt weird but good at the same time, like riding a bike you haven't touched in 10 years. The young guys looked at me like I was doing magic. I get why we moved everything to software, the reporting is faster and the owners love the weekly PDFs, but when the signal drops you realize how much we depend on it. We lost about 2 hours that morning which doesn't sound like a lot until you add up the labor cost. Has anyone found a system that works offline and syncs when you get back to the trailer?
Back in 2016 we had a foreman who kept a laminated card in his vest with the day's tasks written in grease pencil. No battery, no wifi, just wipe and rewrite. New super came in and tossed it in the trash, told him everything was on the tablet now. Couple months later the tablet took a swim in a mud puddle on a rainy pour day and we were back to scribbling on the back of a delivery slip. Point is, some of those old habits stuck around for a reason even after the tech showed up.
