Found out our old estimating software had a 2% error rate on rebar takeoffs, do we trust new cloud tools more or less?
I read a case study from a Houston contractor last month that said switching from spreadsheets to a cloud takeoff tool cut their rebar over-ordering by 12 tons on one job. But my old boss swears the software we ran in 2018 was off by 2% on every single bid and nobody caught it for a year. So which is it, are we better off now or just paying monthly for the same mistakes with a nicer screen?
Ah yes, the classic "trust the cloud" pitch. Your old boss had a 2% error nobody noticed for a year, and now the new tool promises perfection because it has a login screen and a subscription fee. The Houston guy saved 12 tons, but did he check the takeoff by hand to know that, or did the software just tell him it was right? A nicer screen showing you the same bad number is still a bad number. Pretty sure the only thing that actually changed since 2018 is the invoice.
