DAE think cloud-based construction software is worth the monthly fee or is local install still king?
I run a small remodeling company in Denver and I have been using a cloud-based construction management tool for about a year now. Last month I was at a job site in Aurora and my internet went down for like 3 hours and I could not access any of my project files. That never happened when I used a local install years ago. But on the other hand, the cloud lets my crew update progress from their phones and I can see it from my office instantly. So I am stuck between paying $200 a month for cloud convenience or going back to a one-time buy for local software. What do you all think? Is the cloud really worth the monthly cost or am I just paying for a fancy sync button?
That $200 a month adds up to $2,400 a year, which is a lot more than most local installs cost as a one-time buy. But the catch is that local software is not really "one and done" like people remember. You still pay for updates, backups, licenses for each computer, and someone has to run it. The bigger thing your post misses is that the internet outage is not really a cloud problem, it is a setup problem. Most of these tools have an offline mode now where you can at least view your files and make notes until you get signal back. Worth checking if yours has that setting turned on. If it does not, that is a real reason to switch, not just the price.
