Walked past a driveway I did 8 years ago in Phoenix yesterday

The homeowner was out watering and I almost didn't recognize it - the color stayed deep and no spider cracks anywhere. I remember I used a densifier on that one instead of just sealant, guess that made the difference. Anyone else see big differences years later from one product choice?

You ever have one of those jobs where you feel like you just got lucky and the concrete gods smiled on you? Because that's exactly how I feel about this driveway. I got a few old ones I did that still look good, but I also got one that cracked so bad it looks like a map of the LA freeway system. Honestly, half the time I think I'm just winging it and the weather decides everything.

Base prep is everything in this heat, the densifier just buys you a little extra time before the cracks show.

8 years with no spider cracks in Phoenix is damn impressive for any driveway. But honestly, I gotta wonder if it's more about the base prep than the densifier. A good base that won't shift much over time is half the battle, and hot weather can hide a lot of sins in concrete. I've seen people swear by sealant and get 5-6 years easy if they keep up with it, so I'm not sure the densifier is the magic bullet. Plus, maybe that homeowner just got lucky with the batch or the concrete mix that day. Your mileage may vary, but I'd want to see 3 or 4 more of those 8-year old jobs before I'd credit the product alone.
