Vent: That broom finish I did last August looked terrible after the first freeze
I used a cheap magnesium float and the surface came out way too rough, then water got into the pores and spalled off 3 months later in Denver. What trowel or float are you guys using for a smooth broom finish that actually holds up?

Whoa hold up, you used a cheap float for a broom finish? In my experience that's asking for trouble every time.

Mate, you gotta spend the extra few bucks on a decent magnesium float for broom finishes. The cheap ones leave these weird drag lines that show up like crazy when the sun hits it. I've had to grind out whole sections before because of that mistake, not fun. Stick with a 36-inch magnesium float and broom it when the concrete is just past glazing, you'll save yourself a headache.
