Talked to an old timer at the supply yard last Thursday

He said he never uses a bull float on colored concrete because it pulls the pigment uneven. Made me think about all the blotchy jobs I fixed that could have been avoided. Any of you guys skip the bull float on colored pours?

Isn't that kinda overthinking it? Bull floats save time on big slabs.

Right, bull floats are definitely the move for big slabs. You can cover a hundred square feet in a few passes, and a magnesium float just isn't built for that kind of speed. But the difference in finish matters too. A bull float pushes the cream down and closes the surface tight, which is perfect for a garage floor or a warehouse where you want it smooth and durable. A mag float leaves a slightly more open texture, which can help with traction if that's what you're after. It's not overthinking it, it's just picking the right tool for the final result you need.

Wait, a mag float actually leaves a more open texture? I've been using them for years and never noticed that, lmao. That's wild.
