PSA: I had to pick between a magnesium and a magnesium-aluminum float for a 1,200 sq ft garage floor last month.

Went with the magnesium-aluminum one for the weight, and man, did it ever cut down on my arm fatigue by the end of the day. Anyone else have a strong preference for one type over the other on big pours?

Grabby? I was just happy my arm wasn't about to fall off. By the end of that pour, a little grab felt like the float was just helping me out, you know? Like it saw me struggling and decided to pitch in. Maybe my technique is just lazy.

Honestly, I'm the opposite. I find the straight magnesium float gives me way better control on the finish. That combo one always feels a little grabby to me on bigger slabs. Just my two cents.

Read an article last year that said the grabby feeling on combo floats comes from the wood edge breaking down faster than the magnesium. They claimed it creates a tiny lip that catches the cream. Might explain why it gets worse on bigger slabs where you're making more passes.
