I finally learned why my edges kept cracking, it was the mix design all along
Last month I was pouring a small sidewalk in Tulsa and the edges kept spidering on me no matter how careful I was with the float. I figured it was the heat or my timing, so I called my buddy who runs a lab and he pulled the ticket. Turns out the slump was way higher than what I asked for, 6 inches instead of 4, because the plant added water to make the truck go faster. He showed me the ASTM curve about water to cement ratio and how it directly hits flexural strength, and that explained every cracked edge I'd blamed on myself for two years. Now I check the batch ticket before the driver leaves the chute and I call the plant if it's off. Has anyone else dealt with a ready mix plant sneaking in extra water on hot days? What do you do to catch it early before you've already poured?
