Changed my mind on those cheap magnesium floats
I bought a set of three off-brand magnesium floats for about $80 last spring, thinking I'd save some cash. Used them on a garage slab job and they started to pit and rust after just two pours. The finish was never as smooth as with my old Marshalltown tools. Ended up having to rework a section because the float left marks. What brand do you guys trust for a good magnesium float that lasts more than a season?

My buddy had the same problem with a cheap set from a box store. He was floating a basement floor and the thing started to flake black stuff into the cream. Had to stop and hand him my old Goldblatt, which was a pain. He ended up tossing his in the scrap pile by lunch. Never skimp on the float, it just costs more time.

Wait, they started to rust after two pours? That's crazy, magnesium shouldn't rust like that. Sounds like you got some junk metal mix that wasn't pure mag. I've seen cheap ones pit, but actual rust means it was probably full of steel. No wonder it messed up your finish, that's just a total waste of eighty bucks.
