Can we talk about guys finishing concrete in 100 degree heat and chugging energy drinks
I watched a kid on my crew pour a 30x40 slab in Dallas last July and he went through four Monster drinks before noon, then his hands started shaking so bad he couldn't float the edges. I used to do the same thing until a old finisher named Ray told me to drink one bottle of water every hour and eat a banana at break, sounds dumb but I stopped cramping up by 2pm. Now I keep a cooler of water and pickle juice on the truck and the new guys laugh at me but they stop laughing when their legs lock up. Anybody else got a trick that actually works when the heat index hits 105 and you still gotta pull a finish?
his hands started shaking so bad he couldn't float the edges" ok but thats just a guy going way overboard on caffeine, not proof that energy drinks are poison in the heat. four Monsters before noon is like 600mg of caffeine, of course his hands are gonna shake, thats true whether its 105 out or 65. i've been finishing concrete in Texas summers for 12 years and i drink a Monster most mornings, still get my edges floated fine. the real fix is water and salt, but a guy can do both, its not either or. sounds like the problem is that kid had no clue how to pace himself, not the drink. also pickle juice is nasty but hey if it works for you go for it i guess.
