A retired finisher told me to stop chasing the perfect trowel finish on every job. He said 'good enough for the customer is good enough for the shop.' That hit hard.

My buddy wasted a whole day on a ceiling nobody sees.

Maybe your buddy just needed to know it was done right for himself. Some people get peace of mind from the details, even hidden ones.

Watch a new guy spend an hour on a closet floor that gets covered by a shoe rack. The customer won't see it, but his time is gone. I learned to ask myself if a flaw will be seen from standing height in normal light. If not, keep moving. Save that extra care for the front entryway or the living room wall everyone looks at.
