A chat with a retired finisher at the hardware store got me thinking about power trowels

He said he never used them on residential slabs under 500 sq ft, swears by hand finishing for better control. I've always just fired up the ride-on for anything bigger than a patio. Anyone still hand finishing smaller pours, or is that just old school now?

Forget the size, think about the slab's final use.

That's a solid life rule beyond concrete work. People fixate on specs and miss the actual function of the thing. The goal matters more than the measurements.

Honestly, that's such a good point. I got so hung up on the measurements for my patio slab last year and totally messed up the slope for drainage. Had a puddle problem all winter.
