Why does everyone push SSDs on customers who just want their old laptop to boot faster
A customer at my bench in Reno pulled out a 12 year old Toshiba and asked me to swap in a $70 SSD, but I told him a $15 RAM stick would do more for his Word docs and he got mad and left. He came back two weeks later and admitted his grandson did the RAM upgrade and the machine felt new. Anyone else tired of the automatic "just get an SSD" answer for every slow machine?
This matches something bigger I keep seeing, where people learn one fix and then apply it to every single problem without asking if it fits. It happens with cars too, where someone hears "replace the timing belt" and suddenly that's the answer for every weird noise. The RAM versus SSD thing makes sense because a 12 year old Toshiba probably has 4 GB of memory, and Windows alone eats most of that, so the machine spends all day swapping to disk. Drop a few more GB in and the swapping stops, and that feels way faster than slightly quicker file loads. Same pattern with phones, where everyone says clear the cache when the real issue is a full storage drive. The fix isn't wrong, it's just lazy thinking that skips the actual diagnosis.
