Vent: A client's dusty office PC went from 5 minutes to boot to under 30 seconds

Honestly, I got a call from a small law firm downtown last week about a computer that was 'dying'. Tbh, it was just choked with dust. The CPU cooler was completely blocked. I cleaned it out, swapped the old hard drive for a cheap SSD, and reinstalled Windows. The boot time dropped from over 5 minutes to about 25 seconds. Ngl, the owner thought I'd performed magic. Has anyone else had a simple fix completely change a client's view of their old hardware?

Lmao, that's the best feeling. You're totally right, @the_adam, it's like being a tech wizard for the price of a pizza. I swear some of these office PCs haven't seen a dust cloth since they were unpacked. The look on their face when it just... works is priceless.

It's the closest thing we have to real wizardry. A can of air and a cheap SSD can make you look like a tech genius. Makes you wonder how many "slow" computers are just dirty and neglected, right?

Totally revived my cousin's old gaming rig last month with that exact combo. Thing sounded like a jet engine and took five minutes to boot. Blew out about a pound of dust and swapped in a cheap SSD, now it runs quiet and boots in seconds. He thought I performed some kind of dark magic, but it's just basic maintenance most people never do. Makes you realize how much good performance gets buried under neglect.

My old boss still thinks a 2012 laptop I revived with an SSD is his best machine.
