Last Tuesday I got a call about a downed server at a dental office in Oak Park, turned out the power supply was jammed and I didn't have my usual tools in the truck. I ended up using a butter knife from their break room to pry out the stuck PSU and swap in a spare I had. Has anyone else had to improvise with random objects to get a system back online?
Four times in the past year I've used a paperclip to jumper a bad reset switch on someone's old tower. Its funny how we all end up turning random stuff into tools once youve been doing this long enough. The butter knife thing reminds me how the best tech support stories always involve someone eating lunch nearby. My personal record is using a dollar bill folded up to keep a SATA cable from wiggling loose.
Haha the dollar bill trick is genius, I love it. I once used a crumpled up receipt to wedge a loose fan connector back in place on someone's ancient Dell, worked like a charm for months until they finally got a new PC. Paperclips and random lunch items are basically our unofficial toolkit at this point lol.
