Remember when a bad power supply could take out a whole motherboard? Had that happen at a school lab in 2008.

You know what I always wondered about those old school labs? Did they ever check the building's own wiring? Like @gracewebb said, those old beige boxes were crammed full, but a bad wall outlet with shaky voltage could make a cheap power supply go nuclear. I bet half those "faulty PSU" kills were really just the school's ancient electrical system finally having a bad day and taking a computer down with it.

Oh man, that brings back some stressful memories. Was it one of those old beige box units where everything was packed in tight? I'm curious, did the school's tech person ever figure out what specifically failed in the power supply to cause that much damage?

Ugh, total beige nightmare. They never did figure it out, just swapped the whole thing.
