Just found out my tower PC was sitting on carpet for 5 years straight
I was helping a client move their office in a strip mall near Austin last Tuesday and noticed their desktop kept shutting off randomly. Pulled the PSU out and there was a solid mat of dust and cat hair blocking the intake fan, took me 20 minutes to blow it all out.

Yeah vacuum the intake grille at least every six months if it's on carpet.

Vacuuming every six months? That's WAY too long if you ask me. I do mine every single month during the summer when the AC runs nonstop. Carpet or not, that grille is gonna be nasty after a few weeks. Just take five minutes and do it regularly, it makes a huge difference.

Man I've seen this exact thing more times than I can count. The carpet traps static and dust gets pulled into the PSU like a shop vac. If you're gonna keep it on carpet at least put a piece of plywood or a hard plastic mat under it - that alone cuts down on 90% of the junk getting sucked in. Also check the bottom intake regularly, I pop mine open every couple months and hit it with compressed air just to be safe.
