18 months of using the wrong thermal paste

I just figured out I've been putting thermal paste on way too thick for like a year and a half. I always did the pea method but I was using way more than a pea, like a big drop. Fixed a customer's gaming PC at Micro Center last week and the guy showed me how a line down the middle actually works better for Ryzen chips, and my temps dropped almost 10 degrees Celsius. Anyone else have a basic thing they did wrong forever?

The credit card spread method is actually pretty controversial among the people I've talked to, some guys swear it introduces air bubbles. Have you ever pulled your cooler off after a month or two to check for any dry spots or uneven spread, or do you just trust it's good from the start? Because I've seen builds where the spread looked perfect but the pressure from the mount actually pushed it thin in one corner.

Yeah the pea method is super easy to mess up. I did the same thing for years until I built a system with a big TR4 chip and the thermal paste just squished out the sides. Now I do a credit card spread across the whole IHS, just a super thin layer like you're buttering toast. It covers everything evenly and you dont get hotspots. The line method works too but I feel like spreading gives you full coverage with no worry about air pockets. Did you check if your cooler mount was making full contact too?

Take your cooler off after a month and check. I did that once with a spread, and half the paste was pushed to one edge, the other side was dry. The mount pressure doesn't magically stay even just because you smoothed it out. Your cooler's base might be slightly uneven or the socket has a tiny tilt, and spreading can't fix that - it just makes a thin layer that gets even thinner in spots. The pea or line method uses a thicker glob that actually fills the gaps between the IHS and the cold plate, so the pressure self-levels it better. I've seen builds where a spread job looked perfect on install but gave worse temps after a week because the paste pumped out. If you want full coverage without worrying about messing up, just do a pea in the center and let the mount do the work - it's literally designed for that.
