My HELOC rate adjustment clause was way more complex than I realized when I signed the papers in March.

The bank's formula for the new rate after the 5-year fixed period ended tied it to an obscure index plus a 2.75% margin, which added nearly $400 to my monthly payment overnight, so has anyone else gotten blindsided by the fine print on a variable-rate second mortgage?

Wow, that's brutal! Those index plus margin formulas can get really sneaky with how they're written. It feels like they bury the real math on purpose.

Saw a buddy get burned by one last year. He didn't realize the margin could jump after the intro period. Took him months to sort it out.

Gotta love when "teaser rate" really means "we're about to tease your wallet." It's like those gym contracts that look great until you try to cancel. Probably written by the same folks who design cell phone bill fine print.
