Took me 4 years to realize I was diving with my weight belt on wrong

I mean, I've been doing inland jobs and some offshore since 2021, always had my weight belt sitting right on my hips like everyone showed me. Then last month on a bridge inspection in Pensacola, this old timer I was tendering for looked at me and said 'you trying to herniate a disc or what?' He had me slide the belt up higher, almost over my waist, and suddenly I wasn't fighting to stay upright on the bottom. Every trim issue I blamed on my gear or the current, it was just the belt position. The buoyancy math still works but the leverage feels way different. Anyone else grow up in the school of 'just tighten it and deal' and then find out there's a better way? What other basic stuff are we all doing wrong?
