Rant: Why does everyone act like steel toe fins are a scam until they try them?
After smashing my toes against a wreck piling for the third time in a month, I dropped $120 on a pair of heavy duty steel toe fins. They feel clunky on the surface, but under 60 feet they actually give you better kick power because the weight helps you drive upward on the return stroke. Has anyone else noticed that the extra weight actually helps your finning technique or am I just being weird about it?

Well I'm 5'9" and 175 pounds so not a big person. The trick is you have to bend your knees a little more on the downstroke so the fin naturally drops from its own weight. That's the part most people miss. The first few dives with my pair I was just kicking like normal and my legs got torched. But once I figured out that relaxed knee bend the steel toe actually pulled my foot into a better angle for the power up. It's not for flutter kicks though, that's where the weight just kills you. Stick to frog or modified frog and it's a different animal entirely.

That's a solid breakdown and honestly makes a ton of sense once you think about the fin's natural motion underwater. Really appreciate you sharing your own experience with it since most people just write off the weight without trying the right technique. Have you noticed the weight makes a bigger difference in currents or just on normal dives?

Whoa, hold on, let me jump in on that. So you're saying the extra weight actually helps you drive upward on the return stroke? That's the part I gotta dig into more. I've always heard the main argument against steel toe fins is just that they're heavy and tire you out faster, but never heard anyone say the weight changes your kicking mechanics like that. Are you finding you actually have to adjust your whole finning style to make use of that extra weight, or does it just naturally feel better once you're down there? Because that sounds like a real game changer if it's true, but I'm wondering if it only works for certain types of kicks or if you're a bigger person.
