My $300 drysuit undergarment was a mistake on St. Lawrence dives

Bought a top end merino base layer set for the cold water season up here in Quebec. First dive in October, I was shivering after 40 minutes at 30 feet, the stuff soaked through fast. Switched to a cheap fleece onesie from a surplus shop for 60 bucks and I stayed warm for double the time. Anyone else find that spending big on base layers doesn't beat just layering smart?

Wet is wet, trapped air keeps you warm, not the price tag.
