Just realized my old supervisor's 'two-minute rule' on the dive phone was really about radio time, not gear checks
He'd say if it takes under two minutes, do it now before you splash, and I watched a guy in Morgan City skip a hose check that way. Two minutes later he's trying to breathe off a kinked line at 60 feet, so maybe timing yourself isn't the answer here.

That "two minutes later he's trying to breathe off a kinked line" part is exactly why a fast check isn't the same as a real one, because rushing the hose means you're just going through the motions. Making it a hard rule taught people to clock the task instead of actually looking at the gear.
