Old timers just know things you cant learn from a manual. My grandpa used to put a dime under the fuse in his truck to get home when one blew, kept doing it for years even after he could afford real fuses. Same deal with my uncle taping his ladder to the truck rack, swore it never moved once in 20 years. There's something to those little tricks that stick with you way longer than they should. You pick them up from people who learned the hard way and they just become part of how you do stuff. Half the stuff I do daily I couldnt even tell you why, just that somebody older than me said so once.
