Under a video of a guy trying to fix a washing machine with a spatula, someone wrote, 'This is why my landlord asks for a PhD in mechanical engineering and a blood sample before approving a tenant.'

It got 15,000 likes and a reply chain of people sharing their own landlord horror stories, which was way more entertaining than the actual video.

My last landlord wanted a credit check, three references, and a sworn statement I wouldn't try to fix anything myself. The sworn statement was probably a good call on his part.

I read a news article last year about a landlord in Austin who put a clause in the lease saying tenants couldn't use duct tape for repairs. He had a whole list of banned items, including paper clips and chewing gum. He said past fixes caused more damage than the original problem. It makes you wonder what kind of creative repairs he'd seen before.
