Showerthought: I used to think reading YouTube comments was a waste of time, but then I started looking at the replies to the top comment.

For a long time, I just scrolled past the comment section on videos. Last month, I saw a cooking video where the top comment was a simple joke, but the replies under it had a full, hilarious argument about pineapple on pizza that went on for 300 replies. It was way funnier than the video itself. Now I always click to see the replies on a popular comment, because that's where the real chaos and gold is. The main comment is just the bait. Has anyone else found a specific spot in comment sections that always delivers the good stuff?

Hard disagree, the replies are where the whole thing goes off a cliff. You get one decent joke up top, then it's just people tagging their friends, posting the same tired meme for the hundredth time, or having a slap fight over something stupid. I clicked on a thread about a cool car repair video, and the replies were just two guys calling each other bots for 50 comments straight. Total waste of time. The real stuff is buried way down in the comments nobody ever sees.

Yeah, the slap fights over nothing are the worst. I started sorting by "new" on big threads, which helps a lot. You skip the whole mess of upvoted junk and actually find people talking about the real topic.

That pineapple pizza thread is exactly what I love! I found a 400 reply chain under a video about fixing a sink where people were passionately debating the best brand of duct tape. It wasn't about the video at all, but it was this whole weird, specific world. Those rabbit holes feel like finding a secret club. The main comments are often too safe, but the replies go off the rails in the best way.
