Serious question about the comment that changed my whole perspective on newsletter growth

I stumbled onto a Substack post last month where someone said the real trick to growing a newsletter isn't SEO or social media, it's just replying to every single comment you get within an hour. I tried it for 2 weeks straight, about 45 replies total, and my open rate went from 38% to 52%. The comments themselves got longer and more detailed too. Has anyone else tested this kind of personal reply approach, or is it just a honeymoon phase that fades?

Hold up - 52% open rate is definitely solid, but let's not pretend replying to comments is some secret hack nobody's tried before. It's honestly just basic community management (you know, like what forums have done for decades). I'd be more worried about burnout if you keep that pace up for months on end, especially as you grow past a few hundred subscribers. The honeymoon phase could fade once people realize you're just doing it to juice stats, not because you genuinely care about what they say.

Well I read somewhere that brands like Discord grew huge by making their early users feel seen, so maybe there's something to being genuinely responsive without burning out. But you're right, once it hits a certain scale it turns into a full-time job if you don't automate or set boundaries.
