PSA: A local news post about a lost dog turned into a full blown conspiracy theory last week

Our town's Facebook page shared a post about a missing golden retriever named Buddy. The comments started normal, with people sharing the post. Then, someone said they saw a 'suspicious van' near the park that day. Within two hours, the thread had over 300 comments. People were connecting it to a different post about a broken streetlight from the month before, saying it was all part of a pet theft ring. Others were calling them out, saying they were just scaring people and the dog probably just ran off. I watched it all happen in real time. It was wild to see a simple lost pet alert spiral into this huge debate about crime and trust. Has anyone else seen a comment section go completely off the rails from something totally innocent?

You mentioned the broken streetlight post from last month. I saw that one too, and I think people are mixing things up. The streetlight was hit by a city truck doing tree work. The city posted the work order number and everything. It's weird how that got folded into the dog thing. People just grab onto any detail that fits the story they want to believe.

Exactly, it's like they're building a puzzle with pieces from different boxes.

My neighbor's cat got out last year and someone posted it was a coyote. Andrew_gonzalez88 is right, people just add details. The cat was on our porch the whole time.
