Got into a 40 comment fight on a recipe page over whether you can swap butter for margarine
A couple of years ago I would read the comments under a recipe and scroll right past the fights. Last month I posted a banana bread recipe in a Facebook group with about 12,000 members and someone commented that margarine works "exactly the same" as butter. I replied with the old line that my grandma used, that margarine will make it greasy, and within a day I had 40 replies. Two people posted side by side photos of their loaves and one guy swore his margarine version came out better. I ended up baking both batches myself that weekend to settle it and the butter one had a way better crust. The wild part is the whole thread turned into people posting their own swap disasters, like applesauce for oil and black beans for flour. Does anyone here still read recipe comments for the drama or do you just check the ratings and move on?
