Update: My comic shop started charging for browsing and it feels wrong
I remember when hanging out at the shop was part of being a fan, just flipping through books and chatting. Now they have a sign saying you pay a fee if you look for more than ten minutes without buying. It makes the whole thing feel like a transaction, not a community spot. I miss how easy it was to just explore and get suggestions. What do you think about shops adding rules like this?

Consider how shops probably get people treating them like free libraries, which has to hurt when rent's due. The community vibe gets lost sure, but maybe they tried the nice way first and it wasn't working. It feels awkward now, but you could just buy a cheap book to browse guilt-free.

Authors lose royalties on every read copy that never sells, which gets forgotten in these talks. That unsold book in your hand might mean an indie writer misses their next advance. The whole ecosystem suffers beyond just store rent, lol.

Watch your casual flip through a book slowly drain the life out of the next indie author's career. It's like a hidden tax on creativity paid in guilt and unsold inventory. Maybe we should just start leaving apology notes in the pages instead of money. Nothing says support like a heartfelt "sorry" next to the dog-eared chapter you enjoyed for free.
