Unpopular opinion: hunting for a specific comic book variant is a huge waste of time

I spent over 8 months trying to find a clean copy of the 1:100 variant for Immortal Hulk #25 without paying a crazy markup. I checked every shop within 50 miles of Chicago and scoured online auctions constantly. Some fans say the hunt is half the fun, but others think paying a bit extra to just get the book is smarter. What's your limit for hunting a book versus just buying it?

Honestly, that hunt sounds brutal. I got obsessed with a specific cover for a Hellboy book a few years back, the one with the rain on the window. Wasted a whole Saturday driving to three different shops in the suburbs only to find water-damaged copies. Sometimes the chase just kills the joy, you know?

Totally get that. Chasing a specific edition can turn into such a pain. I've been there with old vinyl, where you finally find the record and the cover is totally trashed. It just sucks all the fun right out. Makes you want to give up and order a reprint online.

Absolutely, that moment of disappointment is the worst. I once tracked down a paperback copy of my favorite childhood book for months, only to find the last page was ripped out when it arrived. It completely deflated the whole search. There's a real grief in holding the almost-perfect thing in your hands. Sometimes the reprint is just the better choice for actually enjoying the story.
