PSA: Drive 40 minutes to the shop with the long boxes or just grab the trades?
So I finally had a free Saturday and two things on my list: finish my run of Saga and hunt down some old X-Men floppies I am missing. My local shop in Boise only had the trades and nothing in the back issue bins, but the place up in Nampa had four long boxes of dollar books plus the singles I needed. I went with the 40 minute drive and spent $31 on 22 issues, way better than paying $15 a trade for stuff I already half own. Now I am wondering if the gas and time are even worth it when I could just order the trades online and skip the trip. How do you all decide between chasing floppies in person and just grabbing the collected editions?
How many of those 22 issues did you actually need for your run versus just grabbing because they were a buck? That is the real test here. If 18 of them were filler you will never read again, you basically paid gas money to haul home clutter. But if most of them filled actual gaps in your X-Men run, then yeah, a 40 minute drive for 31 bucks beats waiting on mail and paying shipping on trades. The dollar bin thing only works when you go in with a list and stick to it, otherwise it turns into a cheap excuse to buy junk. Do you keep a want list on your phone when you hit those long boxes, or do you just dig and hope?
