Pro tip: skipping the annual series is fine and the gatekeeping needs to chill
Last week at my shop in Cleveland a regular tried to tell me I can't call myself a real fan of a run because I bailed on the yearly crossover event after issue 3, since it was $5.99 a book for 14 parts and I just wasn't into it. I told him reading order and event tie-ins are optional and that a story should stand on its own, otherwise it's just homework with extra steps. Does anyone else think folks put way more stock in keeping up than in actually enjoying what's on the page?
The bigger issue here is that these events are written assuming you bought everything, so the main book literally cannot stand on its own. You skipped issue 3 of the tie-ins and suddenly the hero has a magic sword nobody explained. That is a writing problem, not a reader problem. People defend keeping up because the books quietly punish you for not doing it, and then everyone blames the guy who quit instead of the folks who built it that way. Your regular has it backwards.
