Overheard a dad at the comic shop telling his kid it's okay to just like the pictures

I was at my local shop, The Dragon's Hoard, last weekend picking up my pulls. This dad and his son, maybe 7, were looking at a big X-Men book. The kid was just flipping pages, not reading the words. The dad said, 'You don't have to read it all right now, just enjoying the art is a good way to start.' It really hit me. I've been so deep in continuity and reading orders for 15 years that I forgot that simple joy. It made me pull out my old copy of 'Kingdom Come' last night and just look at the pages. How many of you got into comics first for the art before the stories?

Honestly that's a nice moment but maybe we're overthinking it. The kid was seven, he probably just wanted to look at Wolverine's claws. Sometimes a dad is just being a dad, not making a big statement about comic book culture.

Yeah but that's the whole point, isn't it? My dad did the same thing with a Spider-Man comic when I was a kid. He wasn't trying to teach me about art history, he was just sharing something he loved with me. That simple act is what got me hooked. It's those little dad moments that build a real love for the stories.

My dad did the same thing with a Silver Surfer comic in 1998.
