Vent: People who call every dark roast "burnt" need to calm down

I was at a cupping last month and someone said my Sumatra was "over-roasted" because they tasted a hint of charcoal. It's a Mandheling, not a breakfast blend. Why do folks act like medium roasts are the only real coffee?

Actually dark roasts get a bad rap because some people treat them like they're all the same. That Mandheling you cupped is a whole different animal from a basic dark roast diner coffee. Those beans are grown in Sumatra with a specific processing method that gives them that earthy, herbal character. When you hit a full city+ roast on a Mandheling, you're supposed to get some smoky notes it's part of the profile, not a flaw. A hint of charcoal doesn't mean it's burnt, it means the roast brought out the natural characteristics of that bean. People need to taste more varietals before they judge.
