Used to free-pour every latte, now I weigh everything and it feels like overkill

Three weeks ago I got tired of guessing and bought a $15 scale for my espresso station. Turns out my 'consistent' portafilter dose was off by 2.5 grams on a busy morning, which explains why my flat whites tasted different every day. Has anyone else found a middle ground between speed and precision, or am I stuck measuring every single shot forever?
