Old coffee shop I used to go to in Portland is totally different now

Went back to the Daily Grind on Hawthorne last week and they replaced the old creaky espresso machine with some shiny automated thing... no more banter with the barista about the weather while they pulled shots. Does anyone else miss the messy, human feel of the old shops?

Used to think the fancy machines were better for consistency but you're totally right. There was something special about watching them wrestle with that old beast and the conversation always felt more real.

Oh, that's a good point. Did you feel like you learned more about coffee from those conversations, or was it just the fun of watching someone work so hard for a cup?
