Just realized my morning pour-over routine has gotten way too complicated

I was timing my bloom at 45 seconds exactly this morning and measuring the water temp to 198 degrees, and I stopped and thought... why am I doing all this? Three years ago I was happy just dumping hot water over grounds in a Mr. Coffee machine. My buddy Dave visited last weekend and made a cup with a basic drip pot, and honestly it tasted fine. Has anyone else gone down the rabbit hole of precision and then wondered if you're just making coffee for the process instead of the taste?

My coworker Mike spent $300 on a scale with a built-in timer and now uses a $10 Walmart drip machine again.

It's like people get so deep into the hobby of making coffee that they forget the actual goal is just to have a decent cup. Mike probably spent all that time and money chasing the perfect pour-over method and realized a basic machine does the same thing without the stress. Reminds me of guys who buy a fancy toolbox but only use a screwdriver and a hammer in the end.

Wait, $300 on just a scale with a timer? I mean, I've seen people go overboard with coffee stuff, but that's wild. @anderson.david your coworker Mike must have really bought into the whole hype about precision and temperature control and all that. You can get a decent scale that tells you the grams for like fifteen bucks at Target. But it's like once you start watching those YouTube videos, they make you think you need all this complicated gear just to make a cup of coffee that's not burnt and bitter. And then you end up back with a Mr. Coffee drip machine, which is fine, but you could have just saved yourself the hassle and the money from the start. I guess some people need to learn the hard way that simple works just as good if not better.
