I started grinding my beans right before brewing and it was a total game changer
Okay, so I've been making coffee at home for a while, but I always bought the pre-ground stuff from the grocery store. My morning cup was just okay, kind of flat tasting. Last month, I finally got a cheap manual grinder, the Hario Mini Slim, just to see what the fuss was about. The first time I ground fresh beans and brewed a pour-over, the smell alone was crazy different. The coffee actually had these bright, fruity notes that I never tasted before. It's like the flavor was just trapped in the whole bean the whole time. I mean, it only adds like an extra minute to my routine, but the difference is huge. Has anyone else made a simple switch like this that totally changed their daily coffee?

Wait, I have to disagree. I tried fresh grinding for a month and honestly my morning cup tastes exactly the same as the pre-ground stuff, just with more mess and an extra step I don't need.

Oh man, same thing happened to me. Got a grinder last year and it was like I'd been drinking brown water before. That first fresh cup is a shock.

You know, I was actually right there with you jamesfox for years. I used to think grinding fresh was just for coffee snobs who had nothing better to do in the morning. Then my brother got me a burr grinder for Christmas and I felt obligated to use it. The first morning I tried it with the same beans I'd been buying from the store, I swear it tasted like a completely different coffee. It was brighter but also smoother, if that makes any sense. Now I can't go back, that pre-ground stuff really does taste flat to me now.

Honestly, the whole fresh grind thing feels a bit overhyped. That extra minute in a rushed morning is a big deal for me, and the taste difference wasn't that crazy. My old pre-ground stuff from the local roaster still makes a totally fine, reliable cup without the mess and extra step. Maybe my palate just isn't that refined, but chasing those "bright notes" seems like more hassle than it's worth for a daily habit.
