Went from hating coolant mist collectors to buying one for my second machine

I used to think they were a waste of shop space until I ran a job with heavy aluminum coolant mist for 6 months straight and my lungs felt like garbage every shift. What finally convinced me was seeing the difference in air quality between my old CNC and the newer one with a collector - it was night and day after just 3 weeks. Has anyone else had a specific health reason change their mind about shop gear?

Hold up, are you sure you're not just overspending on equipment because you ran one bad job? I've been running CNC's for almost 15 years and never had a coolant mist collector, my lungs are just fine. Sounds like you probably just needed to adjust your coolant mix or tighten up your machine enclosures. People act like a little mist is going to kill you but honestly a good fan and open bay door does the same thing for a fraction of the price. You could have just spent that money on a better respirator and called it a day.

15 years doesn't mean much if you're just lucky. Some guys run without guards for decades too but that doesn't make it smart. The mist settles deep in your lungs over time, not something you feel right away until one day you do.

Right, because a fan has ever solved anyone's long term lung issues.
