Talked to a retired machinist about tooling vibration and it made me check my setup
I was at a local shop supply place last Thursday grabbing some end mills and an older guy saw me picking up a cheap holder. He said "son, your finish problems ain't the cutter, it's the holder." He spent 20 minutes showing me how runout in a basic ER collet can ruin a surface finish you'd swear was perfect. Has anyone else found that upgrading their tool holders improved their parts more than switching to expensive cutters?

Oh man, swapping to a hydro chuck was a night and day difference for me (especially in stainless). I couldn't believe how much my old ER collets were messing up my finish just from a tiny bit of runout.
