Talked me out of using compressed air on my machine and it saved my bearings
Was at a meetup in Phoenix last week and this old timer named Mike saw me blowing chips off my Haas with an air gun. He told me I was forcing grit right into the ways and bearings, and he was right. I switched to a vacuum and a brush after that convo and my spindle bearings actually feel smoother now. Has anyone else had a similar wake up call about something you thought was standard practice?

Yeah the air gun thing is a real trap. I used to think blowing chips off was the fastest way to clean until I watched a bearing race get pitted from the grit that got forced in. One thing I gotta gently push back on though... you said you switched to a vacuum and a brush and your spindle bearings 'feel smoother.' That's probably more about the chips not piling up around the spindle seal than the bearings themselves actually changing. Bearings don't really 'feel' different after a few days of cleaning with a brush. The real win is keeping the contaminants out of the ways and seals long term, not an instant smoothness thing. Still a good lesson from the old timer though.

Oh come on now, the smoothness thing isn't placebo. I've seen it firsthand on a Bridgeport that had years of crud packed into the bearing cap. After a proper cleaning with a brush and vacuum, the handwheel definitely turned lighter. Those old sealed bearings still have grease that gets loaded up with fines over time. The grit acts like lapping compound on the races, which is exactly why the old timer was right to stress the brush method. You can feel the difference in spindle rotation when you clear out that packed crud near the shield.
