Switched to climb milling for finishing passes and now I get why everyone swears by it

After fighting chatter on a 316 stainless job for two days straight, an old timer at the shop next door told me to reverse my cut direction and I went from 32 RMS to 12 with half the tool wear, so what made you guys finally give up conventional on hard materials?

Did you happen to catch that thread on Practical Machinist last month about cutter path direction? Some guy tested climb vs conventional on Inconel and posted the tool wear pics, it was wild how much cleaner the climb cuts looked. I always thought chatter was just a feed speed problem until I read that, then I tried it on a job last week and honestly felt like an idiot for not switching sooner. The finish on 316 went from kinda rough to almost mirror smooth, and my inserts stopped chipping on the exit edge. Makes you wonder why the textbooks still push conventional as the default for hard stuff.
